The Philips bdp5012 Blu-Ray player is at worst an interesting revelation and at best one of the best deals to be had in the market for Blu-Ray players. Entering into fierce direct market competition with Sony and Panasonic models, the Philips bdp5012 nurtures its competitive edge by focusing on smoothness of performance and being the best bargain deal rather than on being the highest tech, massively overpriced toy in the market.

Philips bdp5012 Specifications:
The Philips bdp5012 specifications displayed above are standard for any Blu-Ray player on the market, however its price tag of $99.99 for new and $49.99 for used makes it a particularly attractive deal. Its versatility in being able to play pretty much every DVD recordable format (which Sony and Panasonic players do not) along with JPEG support makes it more than just a Blu-Ray player. Conveniently, it does not display the same problems as other Blu-Ray players do in terms of being compatible with older TVs, this it does quite well. If you’re seeking to use analog speakers, then the Philips bdp5012 has 5:1 analog output with distance settings to facilitate that.

When it comes down to the form factor, the Philips bdp5012 sleek black casing with straight lines and rounded edges are hit and miss. The matte black casing is resistant to scratching and is very solid; however the silvered edges are not necessarily aesthetically pleasing to everyone. There are some complaints regarding the speed at which it changes or players disks, however this is something common to all Blu-Ray players and this model is smoother and faster in that context than most others in the market. One more issue that may be raised is software support. Phillips does not update software on its Blu-Ray Players in the manner Samsung or Toshiba does. However, even though this model runs on firmware 1000, it is unlikely to become obsolete in the next several years.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that my experience of this player was less than perfect, but in the scope of realistic appraisal, I honestly found it to be the best money deal in the market where Blu-Ray players are concerned. The audio and video quality left very little to be desired and performance wise, it is better than most high end Blu-Ray Players I’ve used. However, it comes with an Achilles’ heel of software support that may cause the final display to glitch slightly on certain TV settings (like upscale). Overall I would say that the Philips bdp5012 is definitely a bargain that everyone on a budget and a hankering for high definition should snap up.

This unit is a great unit and is superior to Sony & Panasonic models. First it plays all the DVD recordable formats. It loads DVD and blu-ray very fast. It has 5.1 analog outs as well as HDMI and standard 2 channel audio.
